Preparing Your Fleet for Fall: A Carrier Checklist

As summer winds down, fall brings new challenges for fleets and professional drivers. Shorter days, changing weather, wet roads, and shifting temperatures can all impact safety and operations.

A little preparation now can help carriers keep drivers safe, equipment ready, and operations running smoothly throughout the season.

1. Prepare for Shorter Days

With daylight hours decreasing, drivers may spend more time operating in low-light or nighttime conditions.

Make sure headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and reflective materials are clean and working properly. Remind drivers to adjust their speed and following distance when visibility is reduced.

2. Stay Ahead of Changing Weather

Fall weather can change quickly. Rain, fog, wind, and eventually frost or ice can create hazardous driving conditions with little warning.

Encourage drivers to check conditions before heading out and reinforce the importance of slowing down and allowing extra stopping distance when roads are wet or visibility is limited.

3. Give Equipment a Seasonal Check

Changing temperatures make fall a good time to take a closer look at fleet equipment.

Share seasonal safety reminders, communicate potential weather hazards, and make sure drivers know who to contact if they encounter unsafe conditions or equipment concerns while on the road.

Fall is also the perfect time to get ahead of winter preparation. Review winter safety procedures, inspect cold-weather equipment, and identify any maintenance or training needs before the first major winter weather event arrives.
