Staying Safe as a Truck Driver During Protests
Use these trucker safety tips when encountering local protests.
There are currently peaceful protests as well as civil unrest all across our country. The most important part about driving in this environment is to STAY SAFE. Your safety is our greatest concern. Here are some tips:
Keep updated on the latest news and if at all possible, avoid areas with protesters and curfews.
Check your route ahead of time to make sure there haven’t been any road closures. Map out possible escape routes. Lock all your doors before you start your route. Keep your windows rolled up.
TALK TO YOUR CUSTOMER.
If you have to take an alternate route, notify your customer so your location is known at all times.
BE AWARE OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT.
Survey your surroundings at all times in the event you need to make a sudden detour. Don’t risk going into an area where you feel unsafe.
NEVER DRIVE THROUGH A CROWD.
If you find yourself in the path of a crowd, turn down the nearest side road, reverse or turn around. If you can’t drive away, lock the doors (you should have done this already), and calmly and cautiously continue to drive through without hitting anyone.
If you cannot see the police, call 911 and let them know of your situation.
REMEMBER, SAFETY FIRST!
Getting back home safe and sound is your number one priority and our number one concern.
